Groups that met at the November 2nd CARLI Forum "New Directions for the CARLI Collections Awards"

Access and Analysis

Analysis of Utilization Patterns of E-Resources in CARLI Academic Libraries
    • Sharon Hu, Chicago State University
The utilization of E-Resources subscribed by the libraries, including those through CARLI, will be analyzed in a period of three years (2005-2007). This project will benefit CARLI libraries by evaluating the effectiveness of both individual libraries’ and state-wide e-resources and by setting the groundwork investigating more efficient ways to share e-resources among CARLI libraries. The initial participants are Chicago State University, Illinois Institute of Technology, Northern Illinois University and Illinois State University.
    • Charles Uth, Illinois Institute of Technology
I am interested in analyzing the overall strength of subject collections statewide as well as at individual libraries using the "brief tests" methodology developed by Howard White to estimate the RLG conspectus levels.

    Archives, Special Collections

Kathleen Bloomberg, ISL report that this group talked about the following projects:

    • A Print on Demand partnership (a "green" project!), based on the work that former publisher, Jason Epstein, is doing.
    • Student newspapers during the 1960s when students became more environmentally conscious
    • Transferring state microfilm/microfiche documents from the Illinois EPA, as an example, to digital format
    • An Access & Analysis project looking at how many special collections are cataloged in OCLC was also discussed.
Making more collections available at the collection level is needed as well as analyzing which finding aids are available online. A statewide database of finding aids was raised as a possibility, but the lack of a software standard was viewed as a deterrent.

    Benn Joseph, Benedictine University--
We're interested in creating a proposal that will allow for the creation of a website (or perhaps even a wiki) that acts as a directory of finding aids for the state of Illinois. The cultural institutions of this state have finding aids that exist in many different formats, so a database would be difficult to create and maintain. A linked directory would overcome this issue, and it could be organized by geographical region, collection strength, etc. This portal could then be a jumping off point for other CARLI initiatives. We're also interested in proposing a pilot study that would investigate the feasibility of doing this.

Other issues that were discussed included:

    • Cataloging backloads, particularly with serials.
    • Web 2.0 projects in special collections areas
    • Training programs for volunteers (the lack of volunteers in state institutions was noted)
    • Using FLIKR to identify photographs
    • Putting links about collections into Wikipedia
