Groups that met at the October 13th CARLI Collections Working Group Fall Forum
Access and Analysis
While there were no specific projects put forth for sponsorship by an individual or institution, there were a number of ideas put into play and lots of great brainstorming. After Lynn Wiley gave a presentation on her A&A Award project, including outlining the proposal process and answering questions, the following ideas were generated in no particular order:
- Study the barriers & challenges in licensing and copyright e-resources
- Develop finding aids to archives and special collections
- Study the efficiencies of universal borrowing, in light of new statewide delivery service
- Has monograph borrowing plateaued?
- Textbook study (get bookstore data)
- Nonlending vs. lending status of audiovisual materials
- ILL out-of-state requests borrowing w/ followup on filling those gaps
- ILL study—overall costs including scanning
- Study 24 hour ILL deliverables in all formats
- Check out other consortial studies ie. OhioLINK, MOBIUS, ORBIS/CASCADE
Some of the items covered in Lynn’s presentation and the following Q&A:
- Big part of cost (must be outlined in proposal) is in labor for number crunching or grad student or contract work
- Study doesn’t have to be quantitative—can also be qualitative
- Getting the data is always the challenge. Can use I-Share, OCLC to assist and get snapshots needed
- Ask permission via courtesy letter is using other library data for comparison
- Nobody or institution is named when using data—it’s anonymous
- Statewide data would be very useful for institutional program review
- Awards could be multi-year; must still submit proposal each year and document progress from previous year

- Illinois Regimental Histories
Linda Zellmer, Western Illinois University, 2011 is the Sesquicentennial of the Beginning of the Civil War. Having online all the regimental histories from the state of Illinois would make a great resource as the Sesquicentennial will most likely create a heavy demand for materials.
